TREATMENT
Alcoholics and addicts, both substance dependent people, have a desperate desire to control their using. This is fundamentally a desire to avoid the need to stop. The problem is that when there is a need to control it implies there is no control. Sufferers in many cases believing: “What problem? I don't have a problem”. This insidious condition is known as denial which leads to dishonesty, remorse, loss of integrity, guilt, shame, fear of judgement and impaired behaviour.
The values so often destroyed include the trust and intimacy that is vital to sustaining important relationships, self respect, and important social networks. The ongoing deterioration of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and wellbeing jeopardise the very fabric of existence. Over time, conflict with the justice system and employers, loss of financial security, fiscal hindrance, the compromising of moral standards, damaged careers, reduced recreational and sporting interests lead to the loss of opportunity and eventually hope.
The most successful diagnosis for addiction is self diagnosis. When you self-diagnose it empowers you and generates hope for a meaningful and joyous new life. Stopping the use of alcohol and drugs is only the beginning. We are also required to change the emotional, cognitive, and behavioural patterns that so often sabotage early recovery and to connect with and develop that fundamental life force - the spirit. Being willing to honestly move towards surrendering to the gravity of the problem and the need for help giving rise to a spiritual awareness of our uniqueness and value in the world.
The process of treatment at Ahuru Lodge includes an educational and therapeutic component together with socialisation and fellowship. The most important outcome is the revealing of the authentic self: The gentle disclosure of the client's life narrative and exploring the issues that lead to the sabotage and destruction, of the spirit for life with recovery being a pro-life statement.
